Media.Broadcast.Internet CEO, Russ McClinton has launched a non-profit organization that will focus on the use of technology and technical training for inner city youth and families. In March of 2008, with the help of business partner Darren McLaurin, Business Manager Stephanie Hawkins, wife, Dorshai McClinton, The City of Birmingham Division of youth Services and a host of dedicated sponsors and supporters Mr. McClinton re-launched Family Tech Day, an event designed to encourage the use of technology in Birmingham's urban communities.
"My goal with this non-profit is to reach out to our youth and families and establish a foundation that will take a lead role in creating a technical savvy community." states Mr. McClinton. "After Family Tech Day 2008 we were approached by several civic leaders and companies to host Family Tech Day in their communities. This is what led me to finally establish an entity that could focus strictly on the betterment of our communities through the promotion of technology."
Family Tech Day was initially launched in 2002 as a component to Black Family Technology Week. Mr. McClinton is looking to expand the roots of the event and reach out to all young people and families as he approaches the use, knowledge and continued development of technology as an economic development issue.
In addition to the annual Family Tech Day event, Mr. McClinton is looking to launch a monthly technology focused magazine that will highlight new products, technical opportunities in education and business, games, electronics and general how-tos. He is also working with friends to re-launch media projects for area youth that will put them in control of producing responsible media.
Family Tech Day 2008 hosted over 1,500 patrons and was sponsored by ACIPCO, The City of Birmingham Division of Youth Services, Bright House Networks, UAB Computer Science Department and MBI-LLC. The event featured over 30 vendors and technical displays and offered a fun learning environment for all ages.
